Privacy policy

Partytape lets a host invite guests to film an event from their phone’s browser and turns what they capture into an edited film. This policy explains what we collect from hosts and guests, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. Partytape is offered only in the United States.
The short version
- Guests give us a first name and whatever they choose to capture. No account, no email, no phone number required.
- We never ask for access to your email, contacts or bank accounts, and we never sell personal information.
- Uploads stay hidden until they pass automatic moderation and the host’s reveal setting allows it. Voice notes are only ever shared with the host.
- Face matching for personal reels is opt-in, needs separate consent, is off at kids’ events, and face data is deleted after reels are delivered, or within 30 days of the event at the latest.
- Original uploads are kept for 12 months after the event, then deleted 30 days after we remind the host (who can download them all first). The finished film is kept.
- We measure how the product is used with pseudonymous IDs only: never names, emails, phone numbers or media.
- Hosts can remove a guest, with everything that guest uploaded, and delete an event at any time.
Information we collect
From hosts
- Account details: email address and, optionally, a display name.
- Event details: title, date and time window, time zone, guest limit, template, privacy and reveal settings, moment prompts.
- Purchases: plan and payment status. Card details are collected and stored by Stripe, our payment processor; we never see or store full card numbers.
- Device push tokens if you allow notifications in the Partytape app.
From guests
- A first name you enter, and the time you agreed to share your captures with the host.
- Videos (up to 60 seconds each), photos and voice notes you choose to record or upload, with basic file details such as length, size and the time captured.
- Optionally, a selfie, if the host turned on guest reels and you give separate biometric consent (see below).
- Optionally, a US mobile number, only so we can text you a link to your reel.
- A secure cookie that keeps you signed in to that event on your device for up to 30 days.
Automatically
- Basic technical data needed to run the service and keep it secure, such as IP address, browser type and error reports. We do not use advertising trackers on event pages.
- Product analytics: our servers record events such as “joined an event”, “finished an upload” or “rated a film” in PostHog, tied to a random pseudonymous ID (a guest’s session ID or a host’s account ID), never to a name, email address, phone number, or any photo, video or voice note. No analytics script runs in your browser. If you followed a “Start free” link from a film, reel or event page, we remember which kind of page it was (not which event) in a first-party cookie for 30 days to see whether you signed up.
How we use information
- To run events: let guests join, upload, resume interrupted uploads, and receive the host’s moment prompts.
- To moderate: uploads are screened automatically for explicit content before anyone else can see them.
- To make films and reels: we analyse sampled frames and audio to score clips (for example sharpness, faces, motion and laughter), plan an edit and render the film.
- To deliver: email and push notifications to hosts, and one text message to guests who asked for their reel by SMS.
- To understand and improve the product (for example, how many guests finish an upload, or how hosts rate their films), using the pseudonymous analytics described above.
- To process payments, provide support, prevent abuse, and comply with law.
We use automated tools, including AI models, to score and edit footage. They are not used to make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on anyone.
Face matching and biometric information
If a host turns on guest reels, guests may choose to add a selfie so we can find the moments they appear in. This uses facial geometry, which some states (including Illinois, Texas and Washington) regulate as biometric information. We handle it as follows:
- Consent first. We only collect a selfie or create a face template after you check a separate consent box. Joining an event never requires it.
- One purpose. Face data is used only to match you to photos and videos from that one event and build your reel. It is never sold, leased, traded or used for advertising, identification or any other purpose.
- Limited sharing. Matching is performed by our cloud processor (Amazon Web Services Rekognition) on our behalf under contract. We do not otherwise disclose face data unless required by law.
- Retention and destruction. Face templates, match results and your selfie are permanently deleted once reels for the event are delivered, and at the latest within 30 days after the event ends, or sooner if you withdraw consent or the host removes you or deletes the event.
- Withdrawing. You can remove your selfie and withdraw consent at any time from the “Your moments” screen, or by emailing support@partytape.app.
- Security. Selfies are stored encrypted in private storage and accessed only through short-lived signed links by our systems.
Face matching is always off at events the host marks as attended by children.
Children
Partytape is not directed to children under 13, and hosts and guests who give us information must be at least 13 (18 to create a host account or buy a plan). At events the host marks as attended by children, face matching is disabled and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children: children should not join as guests; the adults present film the event. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Who can see what
- The host can see everything uploaded to their event once it passes moderation, and can hide or delete any item, remove a guest together with everything that guest uploaded, or delete the whole event.
- Other guests can see photos and videos only if the host opens the gallery to guests and the reveal time has passed.
- Voice notes are messages to the host: only the host (and the guest who recorded one) can hear them. They are never shown to other guests.
- If a guest reports an item, it disappears for that guest right away and for all guests once a second guest reports it; the host sees every report and decides.
- A film is visible only to the host unless the host creates a share link. Reels are visible to whoever has the reel link.
- Events are never listed publicly or indexed by search engines.
Service providers
We share information only with providers that help us run Partytape, under contracts that limit their use of it:
- Supabase (database and authentication), Cloudflare R2 (media storage), Mux (video streaming), Vercel (hosting).
- Amazon Web Services (content moderation and, when guests opt in, face matching), Google (clip scoring on sampled frames), Anthropic (edit planning from clip descriptions, not raw media).
- Stripe (payments), Resend (email), Twilio (reel text messages), Sentry (error reports), PostHog (pseudonymous product analytics, US hosting).
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect safety, or as part of a merger or acquisition, subject to this policy.
Retention
- Original uploads (photos, clips and voice notes): kept for 12 months after the event. We then email the host a reminder and delete the originals 30 days later. Hosts can download every original as one file at any time before then.
- Films and reels: kept after the originals are deleted, until the host deletes the event or their account.
- Uploads that never finished: deleted after 48 hours.
- A guest the host removes: their uploads are deleted right away.
- Face data: see the biometric section above.
- Guest phone numbers: deleted with the event.
- Host account data: until the host deletes the account. Payment records are kept as long as tax law requires.
Your choices and rights
- Guests can delete any of their own uploads at any time from the event page, and can ask the host or us to remove footage they appear in.
- Hosts can delete items, remove guests, delete events (in any state) or delete their whole account from the app or the web dashboard, at any time. Deleting an event deletes its films, reels, uploads and links; deleting an account deletes all of its events.
- Depending on your state, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or obtain a copy of your information, and to appeal a decision. Email support@partytape.app; we respond within 45 days and will not discriminate against you for using these rights.
- We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Security
Media is stored privately and served only through signed links that expire. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited by row-level security so hosts can only reach their own events.
Changes and contact
We will post changes here and, for material changes, notify hosts by email. Questions or requests: support@partytape.app.
